GYNECOLOGY

Specialized care of the female reproductive system. Services offered include routine gynecological exam, PAP smear, birth control, menopause management, treatment for fibroids, endometriosis, PCOS and abnormal bleeding.

FAQ

1.What is a PAP smear?
    A PAP smear is a screening test for cervical cancer. A sample of cells from the
    cervix are collected and sent to the lab for evaluation. Management depends on
    those results

2.What is a Colposcopy?
    A Colposcopy is an in-office procedure to evaluate an abnormal PAP smear. A
    vinegar solution is placed and the cervix is inspected using magnification.
    Abnormal appearing areas may require a biopsy.

3. What is menopause?
     Menopause is a complete stop on the menstrual period for 12 months or greater.
     This is coupled with low Estrogen levels and high FSH levels. The average age is
     52. Symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, vaginal dryness
     and decreased sex drive.

4. Is it normal to have bleeding after menopause?
     No. This is not normal. Any bleeding after menopause needs to be evaluated to
      rule out abnormal cells and cancer

5. What is an EMB?
      A endometrial biopsy is an in-office procedure where cells from the inner lining of
      the uterus are removed and sent to the lab for evaluation. This is done for
      irregular bleeding, bleeding after menopause, before certain surgical procedure,
      or for abnormal ultrasound findings

6. I have vaginal irritation and discharge. What should I do?
     These symptoms may be caused by several sources such as yeast, bacteria, etc.
     Over the counter medication may be used for certain conditions but not for all. If
     symptoms persist an exam and vaginal culture may be needed.

7. What are fibroids?
     Fibroids are solid tumors of the muscle layer of the uterus. They are rarely
     cancerous. They can enlarge and distort the uterus causing discomfort from
     pressure on surrounding organs and structures. Associated symptoms include
     heavy painful periods and discomfort during sex. Treatment depends on
     symptoms and size of fibroid.

8. When is menstrual bleeding too much?
     Menstrual bleeding is too much if you are soaking through more than one pad an
     hour. Feel dizziness and fatigue,frequently flood tampons and pads, frequently
     soil clothing or bedding,passing clots larger than a ½ dollar size.

9. What is the evaluation for Infertility?
      Infertility occurs in about 15% of the population and approximately 35% of
      couples with difficulty conceiving have more than one issue. An evaluation
      consists of a thorough history, semen analysis, lab testing of various hormones,
      ultrasound and or HSG evaluation of the uterus tubes and ovaries. A treatment
      plan is based on those results and can include referral to a Infertility specialist.

10. What is a Mammogram?
      A mammogram is a screening test used to detect microscopic changes in the
      breast which could lead to cancer. Screening usually begins around age 40 but
      could be earlier based on circumstance.

Supportive obstetric care aimed at delivering a healthy mother and a healthy baby. Services offered include prenatal and postpartum care, vaginal and cesarean section delivery, some high-risk pregnancy care, and infant circumcision.

1. How can I confirm that I am pregnant?
      You can confirm pregnancy by taking a home pregnancy test or by visiting your doctor
      for a blood test

2. What are the common symptoms of pregnancy?
     Common symptoms of pregnancy include missed period, nausea and vomiting, fatigue,
     breast tenderness, and frequent urination

3. How can I manage morning sickness?
      You can manage morning sickness by eating small, frequent meals, avoiding spicy or
      greasy foods, and drinking plenty of fluids.

4. What foods should I avoid?
      You should avoid raw or undercooked meat and fish, unpasteurized dairy products, deli
      meats, and certain types of fish with high mercury levels.

5. Can I exercise during pregnancy?
      Yes, you can exercise during pregnancy, but it is important to consult with your doctor
      first and choose low impact activities such as walking or swimming.

6. Can I have sex during pregnancy?
      Yes. The pregnant cervix can sometimes bleed a small amount during sex causing pink
      discharge. If you have heavy bleeding or severe cramping, abstain and contact you Doctor.

7. What are the signs of miscarriage and what should I do?
     The signs of miscarriage include severe cramping and progressively heavy vaginal

8. What is ligament pain?
      The pelvic ligaments stretch throughout pregnancy. This can cause a sharp discomfort
      on either side or in the middle of your pelvic bone. A maternity belt can help alleviate this
      Discomfort.

9. How can I relieve back pain during pregnancy?
      You can relieve back pain during pregnancy by practicing good posture, using a
      pregnancy pillow, and doing prenatal yoga or other gentle exercises.

10. How can I tell when I am in labor? What is not normal?
        Labor usually occurs between the 3 weeks before your due date and 2 weeks after your
        due date. Regular menstrual like cramping approximately 5 minutes apart worsening
        over several hours and leaking of fluid are associated with labor. Heavy vaginal bleeding
        or lack of movement in the baby is not normal and should be evaluated immediately by
        Labor and Delivery.

     take several weeks to several months to fully recover.

6. Can I have children after GYN surgery?
      This depends on the type of surgery performed. Some surgeries, such as a
       hysterectomy, will result in infertility, while others may not impact fertility.

7. How do I prepare for surgery?
      Preparation for gynecological surgery can include presurgical testing, avoiding
      certain medications, and following pre-surgery instructions provided by your
      surgeon.

8. How long will I need to take off work after surgery?
      This can vary depending on the type of surgery performed in the individual
      recovery time. Your surgeon will provide guidance on when it is safe to return to
      work.

9. Will I need a follow up appointment after surgery?
      Yes, follow-up appointments will be necessary to monitor healing and ensure that
      there is no complication.

10. What are the signs of infection and what do I do?
        Signs of infection include fever, pus-like discharge, redness and swelling. Contact
